The Okanagan Science Centre began as a small, volunteer-run initiative founded by Bill Sim with a vision to make science accessible to all. What started as a modest room in the Tolko building has since grown into a thriving destination that welcomes over 25,000 visitors each year. Bill’s dedication laid the foundation for a centre that continues to inspire future generations of scientists and curious minds.

Critter Corner
Critter Corner is a must-see for animal lovers and offers visitors a chance to observe a variety of fascinating creatures up close. The highlight for many is the freshwater axolotls, known for their unique ability to regenerate limbs. Geology Rocks

Light and Sound
The Light and Sound exhibit takes visitors on an exciting journey through the science of optics and acoustics. The Shadow Room lets you explore how light creates silhouettes, while Colours and Colourful Shadows reveal the magic of light refraction and absorption. Visitors can also engage with the Polarization Station, create patterns on the Giant Litebrite, and experiment with various musical exhibits to see how sound waves interact with different materials.

The planetarium offers a rotating schedule of public shows, and pre-registration is recommended to secure a spot.
The Centre also works closely with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), offering opportunities for visitors to engage with astronomy enthusiasts and professionals. Events like Star Parties and visits to Dark Sky Preserves allow guests to explore the cosmos with expert guidance.
Special Exhibits and Events
Throughout the year, the Centre hosts a range of rotating exhibits. Until September 2024, visitors can explore “To What Degree? Canada in a Changing Climate,” an exhibition that highlights the effects of climate change on Canadian ecosystems and communities. Through powerful imagery and storytelling, the exhibit offers insight into how individuals and groups are adapting to environmental changes.
Starting in November 2024, the Centre will launch “Tentacles & Company,” an interactive and playful exhibit focused on octopuses, squid, and jellyfish. This engaging experience will look into the intelligence and importance of these marine creatures, combining games, films, and other multimedia displays.
AI Playground and Robotics Lab
The Centre’s newest addition, the AI Playground and Robotics Lab, is an exciting space where visitors can explore artificial intelligence and robotics.
