Exploring the BX Creek and Falls Trails: Vernon’s Nature Escapes
The popular BX Creek and Falls Trails in Vernon are known for offering scenic hiking experiences through forested paths, creekside views, and historic sites. Vernon’s BX trails provide a unique opportunity to explore the region’s natural beauty and history, whether you’re looking for an easy stroll or a challenging hike.
BX Creek and Falls Trail: A Scenic Forest Hike
The BX Creek and Falls Trail is one of Vernon’s most loved paths, winding through a dense forest along the peaceful BX Creek. This trail leads hikers through shaded areas, over bridges, and up to the stunning BX Falls, covering a distance of 3.7 kilometres.
Following the trail through lush forest, hikers will see cedar and birch trees along with other native plants like devil’s club and horsetail. While generally calm and shaded, the path includes several sections with uneven surfaces and occasional steep climbs, especially at the northeast end near the falls. Here, the trail ascends via a stairway, making the experience more demanding and rewarding for those reaching the top. During spring runoff, hikers should be mindful of water levels, as parts of the trail may become flooded and unsafe to use.
Access Points: Accessible from two main trailheads on Star Road and Tillicum Road
Star Road (Southwest Trailhead): From Vernon, take 48th Avenue east, which becomes Silver Star Road. Continue past BX School, then turn right onto Star Road. The trailhead is on the right, just before the road turns left up the hill. There’s a sign and designated parking area near the trailhead. Note: Be sure to use the northern trailhead on Star Road.
Tillicum Road (Northeast Trailhead): Continue up Silver Star Road for another 2 km, then turn right onto Tillicum Road. Drive about 1 km along Tillicum Road, and parking is available on the right side of the road just after a hard right-hand turn.
Upper BX Creek Trail: Newer Extension
For those seeking a more challenging hike, the Upper BX Creek Trail offers a 5.8-kilometre journey with a significant elevation change of 540 metres. Starting from Silver Star Road, this trail goes through the forest, leading hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners through a rugged landscape that demands endurance and careful footing.
The route is known for its zigzag path across streams and through dense forested areas. Along the way, hikers will encounter a variety of features, including wooden bridges, boardwalks, and a diverse array of local flora. While mountain bikers typically choose to descend from the top, hikers are equally likely to enjoy the trail in either direction, provided they are prepared for the steep sections. Limited cell service and the remote nature of this trail require that users plan ahead and bring essentials like water and a trail map.
Access Points: Begins at Silver Star Road, with a secondary access point on Forsberg Road
Silver Star Road (Sovereign Lake Road Intersection): There’s a large parking area located off Silver Star Road, downhill and directly across from the Sovereign Lake Road intersection. This access point is convenient for hikers and mountain bikers beginning from the top of the trail.
Forsberg Road (Lower Trailhead): This trailhead has limited shoulder parking on Forsberg Road. A small kiosk marks the trail entrance, making it easy to locate the starting point from this side.
BX Creek Delta Trail: A Tranquil Walk by Swan Lake
For an easier route that still offers access to the beauty of the BX Creek, the BX Creek Delta Trail stretches 1.5 kilometres as it winds toward Swan Lake. This level trail is a perfect choice for those seeking a relaxing walk or an easy cycling route through Vernon’s Black Cottonwood riparian ecosystem.
Interpretive signs, benches, and a lookout for observing Great Blue Herons make this trail an enjoyable and educational experience. The crushed stone surface, along with boardwalks and several creek crossings, provide an accessible path for all ages and abilities. This trail offers a comfortable outdoor experience.

BX Ranch Trail: Views and a Touch of History
The BX Ranch Trail provides another accessible option with a bit of moderate elevation gain at its BX Road entrance. Running 2.25 kilometres around the former BX Ranch farmlands, this trail offers a scenic mix of open fields and shaded pine forest.
The trail is lined with benches for taking in views of the Foothills, Silver Star Mountain, and Vernon Hill. As hikers move southward, they’ll pass the Mutrie Dog Park and end at the BX Ranch Dog Park, making this trail a popular route for dog walkers. As they travel, visitors are treated to the sights and sounds of the area’s songbirds and have the opportunity to learn about the historic BX Ranch, established in 1860 by Francis Jones Barnard as part of his stagecoach business, Barnard’s Express which is where the name BX comes from. Please note that the trail does not form a loop, so plan your route accordingly.
Access points: Multiple points including East Vernon Road, BX Ranch Dog Park, and Mutrie Dog Park
East Vernon Road (East Trailhead): Head north on East Vernon Road from Black Rock Road. You'll find a small parking area with a trailhead signpost on the west side of the road, next to a large wooden barn.
